Royalty-free, public domain images

Finding good, free images without copyright restrictions can be trying, to say the least. You probably know what I am talking about if you have a blog or a newspaper or any published material that uses stock photography of any kind.

So I thought I would compile a short list of some of my favorites as well as a link or two to some more extensive lists that are out there.

With all of these links make sure you check the licensing and copyright information, some of the sites are not all public domain material, but the policies vary from site to site. If I know them specifically, off the top of my head I'll put a short note next to the link. Also check the policies regarding link backs or credit, I'll note it if I know it.

YotoPhoto-all public domain images here, it works like a search engine to return public domain images. (highly recommended).
Alamy-another good site, not all public domain but you can narrow the search field. (highly recommended).
stock.xchng-180,000 images, all public domain. (highly recommended).
MorgueFile-all public domain, must credit photographer. (good site).
FreeMediaGoo-this site has free images, audio, flash and textures, I just found it though.
StockVault.net-stick to the free image gallery and you should be alright.
Nations Illustrated-over 7,100 images, looks like non-commercial use only. CORRECTION: NationsIllustrated.com doesn't limit any way the use of pictures. Almost all pictures are restrictions free (including commercial) and some of them have Creative Commons licensing options. Thanks to Armen Oulikhanian, the Webmaster over at NationsIllustrated.com.
Pixel Perfect-all public domain, no credit necessary and commercial use allowed it appears.

The govenment maintains a number of photo databases that are public domain.

USDA
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

National Park Service
NOAA

Lists of links

Here is a link to a huge list on firstgov.gov to government photos and graphics, note the disclaimer at the top of the page. Most work published by the government is in the public domain, so peruse the list of U.S. Departments and Agencies, most of what you find should be fair game for your use. LSU maintains its own database as well.

Other Lists
